Old Dominion Freight Line Honors Roanoke Manager With National Award

Company recognizes Roanoke manager with prestigious service award

Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. has announced the 2018 John Yowell OD Family Spirit Award recipient is Donald Powell. Powell joined the company in 1999 and has served as the operations manager in the Roanoke  service center for four years.

Old Dominion created the award to preserve the legacy of the late John Yowell, former executive vice president and COO, and his perpetual spirit of giving. The award recognizes an employee who embodies the “OD Family Spirit” through selfless dedication to helping others.

“I’ve been with OD for nearly two decades, and I am so excited to be recognized with the John Yowell award. Great leaders have previously won for their exceptional character, and I look up to those past winners as examples and mentors. I work hard to stay involved and listen to our customers’ needs, and I’m honored to be recognized for it,” said Donald Powell.

Powell serves in many different capacities in his community through his church, North Roanoke Baptist Church, in scouting as the Boy Scout Leader for Pack 773 and through the PURE Special Needs Ministry.

In addition, he works as a Chapter Advisor for the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s National Honor Society. He lives in Roanoke with his wife, Christina and three children: Alexander, John and Abigail.

“Donald gives back to his community through faith and good work, and he is an exact embodiment of who we believe deserves the John Yowell OD Family Spirit Award,” said Greg Gantt, president and CEO of Old Dominion Freight Line. “His efforts are inspirational and a great example of what we hope for all of our employees.”
