The Market Gallery featured artists, September 26 through October 26, are Winn Ballenger and Brett LaGue. The artist will be available at a reception on Friday, October 4 during Art by Night from 5:30 to 9 p.m.  Winn will provide a brief artist talk at 6:15 and Brett at 6:45 p.m.

Many of Winn Ballenger’s recent works were painted in various parts of North Carolina. Using oils, she works to capture the effect of light in landscapes and interiors. Many of the venues depicted in her new paintings have a personal attachment and are part of her history. “Beach Baby 1”, 9” X 12”, oil on canvas, was painted on the coast near Morehead City where Winn spends time each summer. It was an exercise in using a very limited palette of 4 colors.

Despite wet weather, Brett LaGue has spent the majority of the summer painting out of doors. Both around his home in Fincastle and in plein air painting competitions in Virginia, Maryland and Vermont. Using primarily acrylics, his goal is to capture and share the experience of each painting adventure with the viewer. An excellent example of this is “Morning Light” 11” X 14”, acrylic painting on canvas panel. It was painted recently along a Norfolk canal, while participating in Plein Air 757.

The Market Gallery, a regional artists’ cooperative, is open 10 am to 5:30 pm Tuesday – Saturday and is located at 23 Salem Avenue on the corner of Wall St and Salem Ave in Roanoke’s historic downtown market.
