In His Element

Dr. Bruce Rinker

Dr. H. Bruce Rinker, former science department chair at North Cross School (and Roanoke Star contributing columnist), led students to Tinker Creek on Earth Day to clean up the iconic waterway. Rinker told the 20 freshmen in Mark Thompson’s Introduction to Global Studies class about Annie Dillard’s Pulitzer winning poetic tribute to the creek. Inspired to action, the students almost literally dove into the water, removing one truck tire, seven more car tires, two lawn chairs, and one bike in addition to the twenty bags of assorted trash they removed. Rinker spoke to the school about the global problem of water-borne plastics in the latest installment of the Global Studies Speaker Series on Monday at North Cross. He is now the Director Of Scientific Advancement And Development at the Biodiversity Research Institute in Gorham Maine.
