Literacy Organization Sets Roanoke “Spelling Bee World Series”

Can you spell “cat”?  What about “dockwalloper”?  Or “meerschaum”?

Whether or not you can, Literacy Volunteers of Roanoke Valley wants you to join in for fun and fellowship at the Valley’s newest special event fund raiser, the “Spelling Bee World Series.”

The event, to be held the evening of Tuesday, October 25, from 5:30 until 8:30 at Christ Lutheran Church on the corner of Grandin Road and Brandon Avenue, will raise funds for the literacy organization to continue its mission to overcome illiteracy in the Roanoke Valley.

Unlike other spelling bees, this event—being held during Major League Baseball’s playoffs—is built around a baseball format.  Participants play on three-person teams, and play an entire nine “inning” game, getting the chance to “come to bat” and spell words (and score points) every inning no matter how well they have done in previous “at bats.”

“This format means that every participant gets to be part of the entire evening’s activities, and to have the chance to catch up with others even if a word or two was misspelled earlier,” said Russ Merritt, Executive Director for Literacy Volunteers.  “Our focus is on having a great time in a good, competitive setting, and of course raising support for the important work we do.”

Participants can register as a team of three, or as individuals to be placed on teams with other “free agents.”  Cost for a team is $60, or $20 an individual, with all proceeds going to support Literacy.  To register, or for more information, contact Russ Merritt at 265-9339.
