Author Phillip Yancey Speaks in Roanoke

Over one hundred and twenty five people, including 90 pastors representing  a variety of denominations came  to hear award winning evangelical Christian author, Phillip Yancey, at the Pastor’s Lunch and Learn Luncheon on Monday, October 17th at the Rescue Mission.

Yancey’s 25 books include What Good is God?, What’s So Amazing About Grace?, Where is God When It Hurts?, and Disappointment With God.  Yancey’s books have won thirteen Gold Medallion Awards from the Christian Publishers Association and have sold more than fifteen million copies in English, as well as translations in thirty-five languages.

Yancey does not present himself as a theologian or as an expert on any one subject.  Rather, he says he writes as a reporter who is trying to find the answers to his own questions.  His questions take him to the library and to people who are experts on theology and philosophy, but he also finds his material on field trips all around the world.

“We were delighted to have Phil and his wife Janice back at the Mission. In true Yancey style, he mentioned the Mission in some of his books following that last visit, so we expect to be a footnote in some of his next books.” said Joy Sylvester-Johnson, CEO of the Rescue Mission.”

“He (Yancey) is looking for places where the Body of Christ is alive and working and “real” … and it just doesn’t get more real than at a Rescue Mission” continued Sylvester-Johnson.

Yancey was also the speaker for the annual Dodson Lecture hosted on Monday by St. John’s Episcopal Church where he talked about the seasons of his life and faith to a filled to capacity church.
