“Friends” Present The Blue Ridge Parkway – A Most Visionary Thing!

BlueRidgeParkway_feFRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway begins its Summer 2014 Saturday Workshops on the Parkway with a presentation on parkway history by Peter Givens, a National Park Service interpretive specialist.

“The Blue Ridge Parkway – A Most Visionary Thing!” delves into the minds of the parkway’s original planners as we examine the elements that guided them and today’s park managers.  We learn about the planners’ methods – drawing on paper, driving back roads and scouting routes as a means to developing design standards.  Their great success was building a parkway that “lay easy on the land” and remains so to this day.

Two seminars will be conducted. The first is Saturday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Peaks of Otter Lodge at MP 86. Registration is due by June 28. The second on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 10 a.m. to noon at the FRIENDS home office on Pheasant Ridge Road in Roanoke; registration is due August 23.  Sign up today by calling 540-772-2992 or 800-228-PARK (7275.) This workshop series in made possible in part by the generous support of The Morningstar Foundation and an anonymous donor.
