Recipe of the Week: Slumber Party Pretzels

by Leigh Sackett

Ten might be a magical number. I say this because my daughter will turn ten on June 2nd and working towards ten seems to have magically transformed her. Some changes are a little scary for us adults who love her but most are quite amazing.

As all of us watch our children grow we see glimpses of the adults they will become, which is such a treasure to witness. What a gift to be given – to watch a little person being formed a little more each day while still holding the memory of the little baby they once were, so fresh in your mind.

I suppose that is how God sees us all. Since He is outside of time, there we are in his eyes – small and precious, young and precocious, middle age and learning, old and wise – all at once.  Every single one of us, His children, that He loves, appearing all through life before Him.

When I think of ten-year-old Maddie’s life in such a way – all before me, my heart just swells. How much more it must be for God. It is hard to fathom, yet through my own heart I get a glimpse of such a Love. We are Blessed to know it.

Maddie is having a slumber party this Friday – seven girls are sleeping over. (Prayers appreciated!) I thought these creative girls would love to make their own soft pretzel shapes, it will be interesting to see what they come up with!! I hope you enjoy this pretzel recipe, it is great summer time activity when things get a little rainy outside or when you are just looking for something new to do with the kids.

3/4 cups of warm water

1 1/4 tsp yeast

2 cups of flour

1/2 tsp salt

1 egg

1 tsp water

Sea salt

-Soften the yeast in the warm water for 2-3 minutes. Mix in the flour and salt and knead well then cover and let rise for 10-15 minutes.

-Break the dough into pieces and form into letters, numbers, shapes, pretzels or any designs!

-Beat the egg and water together then brush the tops of the pretzels with the egg mixture. -Sprinkle with sea salt. Let dough rise until doubled in size, about 15-20 minutes.

-Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and bake for 12-15 minutes. Enjoy!
