The magic of The Nutcracker truly wouldn’t be complete without Clara’s enchanting godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer. For the past 19 seasons with Southwest Virginia Ballet (SVB), William Fleming High School drama teacher and actor, Larry VanDeventer, has played the role of Drosselmeyer with great energy and passion.

As he prepares for his 20th performance this year, VanDeventer shared some of his favorite memories from past productions of The Nutcracker. “I think that the kids involved are really wonderful to work with,” he said. “I also have enjoyed working with Tess Post (Founding Artistic Director) and I have also become very good friends with Pedro Szalay (SVB Artistic Director).”

VanDeventer has been involved in SVB productions since 1995 and has performed a variety of roles in numerous performances such as Dr. Coppelius in Coppelia, the Ugly Stepmother in Cinderella, Lord Capulet in Romeo and Juliet, and his favorite, Herr Drosselmeyer from The Nutcracker.

“Working with SVB in The Nutcracker all of these years has helped me keep up with my craft of acting and to stay in touch with all that actors go through,” VanDeventer said when asked how performing in The Nutcracker ties into his profession.

With the many experienced years behind him, it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing the role of Drosselmeyer as well as VanDeventer. SVB is grateful to have such a wonderful individual as part of their organization. His 20th year of performing The Nutcracker is sure to bring magic and excitement to all who come to watch.

This year there will be three shows: Saturday, December 12th at 2 PM and 7 PM, and Sunday, December 13th at 3 PM. On Sunday, tickets are also available for Clara’s Tea Party, a VIP meet and greet with a few of the cast members before the show.
