Visionaries and businesses encouraged to apply by mid-November

The deadline is nearing for Roanoke Natural Food Co-op’s Request for Proposal regarding the future use of their property at 2051 Blue Hills Drive, commonly referred to as “Heritage Point.” The deadline to submit a proposal is November 15, 2016.

Roanoke Natural Foods Co-op is looking forward to starting a partnership in 2017 with an organization with a vested interest in Roanoke that will utilize the co-op’s land, buildings and resources at the site to create some positive community impact.

The property that was Heritage Point Urban Farm from 2012-2015 is located in the Roanoke Centre for Industry and Technology off of US-460. Deschutes Brewery, which this year announced they would be expanding to Roanoke, is building their east coast home across the street from the co-op’s property.

“This property has the potential to be a great resource for the community,” said co-op general manager Bruce Phlegar, “and its success will likely come through a partnership between the co-op and another organization, group or individual.”
The City of Roanoke has announced plans to build a new paved road and make improvements to the utility infrastructure leading to the properties owned by the co-op and Deschutes. Plans are also underway to bring the greenway through the area.

“I believe this property, with the right partnership and the support of the Roanoke Valley’s vibrant community of doers, will come alive in ways that we may not be able to imagine today,” Phlegar said.

Founded in 1971 in the basement of its founding members, Roanoke Natural Foods Co-op is now the largest cooperatively-owned grocery store in Virginia. The co-op incorporated in 1975 and now operates two retail locations in Roanoke, providing the community with local, natural and organic food without artificial ingredients, preservatives or colorants.
Operating under the international cooperative principles and with a triple bottom line, Roanoke Natural Foods Co-op exists to create a vibrant, local and sustainable cooperative community where decisions are grounded in the balance of economic, social and environmental responsibilities.
