Colonial Avenue will feature two new round-abouts as part of a major upgrade.

In a few short years, part of Colonial Avenue will have an entirely new look and feel as the city plans to add two roundabouts to the area.

Nearly two years ago, Virginia Western Community College officials approached the city about making changes to the portion of Colonial that stretches from Overland Road to McNeil Drive. With the college expanding, their idea was to help traffic flow, and give it a more campus-like feel.

Since that initial conversation, much progress has been made. Roanoke’s team of engineers partnered with the Line + Grade engineering firm to come up with a final plan. The proposal includes two roundabouts, a median throughout, greenway access, and bike lanes.

The city hopes to start construction in the fall of 2017, with completion in the fall of 2018. During the project, one lane will remain open in each direction. A website has been set up to allow citizens to stay up to date with the project.
