The Taubman Museum of Art will to present American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell, March 20-June 12, 2016.

Organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Mass., the Taubman’s presentation of this national traveling exhibition is the final time that American Chronicles will be on display before returning to the Rockwell Museum. The retrospective features more than 100 of Norman Rockwell’s most significant works created throughout his prolific 65-year career.

“Norman Rockwell is one of the most iconic, celebrated artists of our time,” said Della Watkins, executive director of the Taubman Museum of Art. “His unique artistic legacy both reflected and profoundly influenced American perceptions and ideals. From the rise of the automobile to World War II and from the Freedom Movement to space exploration, Rockwell chronicled the most significant moments of the 20th century. We are honored to be the host of this significant exhibition on its last leg of the tour.”

The exhibition includes original paintings, illustrations, preliminary sketches, 323 covers from The Saturday Evening Post, color studies, detailed drawings, and images of Rockwell at work. Notable works on display include No Swimming (1921), Going and Coming (1947), Art Critic (1955) and Triple Self-Portrait (1960).

“American Chronicles presents a wide-range of Rockwell’s art, and it explores his profound impact on American culture and how he helped define the way our nation sees itself in terms of family, innocence and heroism,” noted Amy Moorefield, Taubman Museum of Art deputy director of exhibitions and collections. “An exhibition of this magnitude coming to Roanoke is a rare and special experience for our community.”

The exhibition marks the debut of the Museum’s new 3,400-square-foot Special Exhibition Gallery, funded by the Taubman Foundation. The state-of-the-art gallery includes features such as LED lighting and climate controls that will enable the Museum to bring other world-class art to southwest Virginia.
