Cave Spring’s Brody Hicks (#5 in black) drives to the basket against a trio of William Fleming defenders Wednesday night in the K-Guard Holiday Classic final. Fleming held off the Knights 51-45 to capture their third straight K-Guard title.

It was a three-peat for William Fleming, a repeat for Northside and a runner-up finish for the Lord Botetourt girls Wednesday night in holiday basketball tournaments throughout the Roanoke Valley.

William Fleming outlasted Cave Spring 51-45 in the K-Guard Holiday Classic boys basketball tournament held at the Salem Civic Center.
It was the third straight K-Guard tournament win for the Colonels, who have obviously found the civic center hardwood to their liking after going 9-0 in their last three trips of the 8-team, 3-night event.
Wednesday night, Fleming jumped out to a 23-13 halftime lead fueled by a late 12-2 run, and never trailed the rest of the way in getting the win over the Knights.
The Colonels went inside for layups and offensive boards leading to scores in the third quarter to maintain a nine point lead heading to the final eight minutes.
Cave Spring, always a threat from behind-the-arc, got to within 4 points in the final minute on a Mason Reyer 3-pointer, but the Colonels prevailed down the stretch.
Tyrell Adams led the Fleming attack with 20 points, including a pair of treys and a perfect 4-fo4 from the charity stripe.
Reyer led Cave Spring with 14 points, while fellow-senior Brody Hicks added 13.
Adams, Reyer and Hicks all made the All-Tournament Team.
The other ‘Big-11’ entry in the K-Guard, Hidden Valley, saw its second-half rally fall just short in a 48-43 loss to Kettle Run. Jonah Fitzgerald was the sole double-digit scorer for the Titans, netting 12 points.
At Northside High School, the host Vikings won their second straight Northside Invitational Tournament with a 84-46 win over Lord Botetourt.
It was all-Vikings in the 3-day event as Northside won by 56 points over Galax in the opening round, 27 over George Wythe in Tuesday’s second round, before the 38-point margin in the title game.
In Wednesday’s final, Northside jumped out to a 42-26 halftime lead and never looked back to improve to 8-1 on the season.
Kendrick Tucker led Northside with 28 points while Carlos Basham and Nick Price scored 13 points apiece for the Vikings.
Ryan Fralin, who quarterbacked Botetourt to a football state final appearance earlier this month, led the Cavaliers with 11 points. Justin McIvor followed with 10 points.
William Byrd, the other ‘Big-11’ entry in the NIT, finished third after a 71-43 win over George Wythe on Wednesday night.
In girls tournament action at Cave Spring High School, the Broadway Lady Gobblers defeated the Lady Cavaliers of Lord Botetourt to capture the Knights Winter Classic.
While the temperatures outside have been unusually warm, Broadway was equally hot inside the Cave Spring gym. The Gobblers led 32-24 at the break before putting the game away by outscoring Botetourt 18-5 in the third quarter.
Chrissy Delawder led Broadway with 21 points. Maggie Quarles paced Lord Botetourt, scoring 10.
Other ‘Big-11’ entrants in the Winter Classic saw Roanoke Catholic finish fourth, while Patrick Henry, Northside and Cave Spring finished 6th, 7th and 8th, respectfully.
Quarles and Northside’s Alexis Hueston were nam4d to the All-Tournament Team.
