Roanoke City Councilman Dave Trinkle has made it official – he is running for Mayor in May’s election.

Trinkle stated, outside the Roanoke main library branch in November, that he has the background and qualities necessary to be an effective mayor. “[Candidates] must be experienced, be strategic and informed, and welcoming as we seek new businesses and creative collaborations.”

Trinkle is a geriatric psychiatrist at Carilion Clinic and an associate dean at the Virginia Tech-Carilion Medical School. He is also known for owning several “Fork” restaurants. Trinkle said if fellow Democrat and council member Sherman Lea jumps into the race any primary would be a collegial affair. (Lea has already indicated he plans on running.)

Trinkle (who has two years left on his Council term) also said he has the time, energy and experience needed – with a City Council that could have as many as three new members next May. He knew Mayor David Bowers would not run but waited for the incumbent to make that announcement before he declared for the Democratic nomination.

“My main focus is continuing the economic mission of increasing our population [and creating more] well paying jobs,” said Trinkle. The vice mayor also pointed to projects he voted on as noteworthy: the Elmwood Park Ampitheater, the City Market plaza and Market Building makeover, library upgrades, on-campus high school football stadiums etc. were signs he said of progress in the city. Trinkle said they were also examples of the leadership and collaborative spirit a mayor should possess.
