Southwest Virginia Ballet Honored in Europe

Seventeen dancers from Southwest Virginia Ballet have returned from their third appearance at the New Prague Dance Festival and Competition 2015 in Prague, Czech Republic.

 The ballet company received the following international recognition at the festival:

  • 2nd place – Classical Ballet
  • 2nd place – Pedagogy – Pedro Szalay, SVB Artistic Director
  • Grishko International Award (financial award of 1000 EUR)
  • One company member received Talent in Dance
  • Special Participant Award (Voted by peers)

 SVB competed against some very talented groups which included BYU Contemporary Dance Theatre, The Academy for the Performing Arts-USA, ArtsExcel-Malta, Het DansAteljee-Belgium, Alan and Becky Dance Group-Hong Kong, and many more.

Artistic Director, Pedro Szalay included excerpts from SVB’s 2015 production of Cinderella, the pas de troix from Le Corsaire, and several original pieces for their performances while at the festival.

The world renowned panel of judges included members of the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, Faculty of Dance – Charles University, Czech Culture, National Theatre Ballet, Prague and international members: Stuttgart Ballet, Grand Ballet, Genéve, Bolshoi Theatre-Moscow and Kasay Dancing Company.
