Roanoke City Councilman Sherman Lea joined with fellow community leaders to announce the Lea Youth Outdoor Basketball League, a five-week summer basketball program open to youth ages 11 to 18.

Team play begins this month, with games scheduled each Tuesday and Thursday evening on the outdoor basketball courts at Melrose Park. There is a $10 fee to join the league, which covers uniforms, water, and certified referees. Scholarships are available for any child who would like to participate.

“This is not just another summer basketball league,” said Lea, speaking to a crowd in Roanoke. “We are focused on building a stronger community for our youth.”

In addition to basketball, players will meet for “Quality Moment” sessions. Community leaders, former college athletes, college coaches, and others will talk with the students about core values of discipline, respect, and the importance of quality decision-making and self-esteem.

The league was formed in partnership with the Life Ring Foundation, the Inner City Athletic Association, the Roanoke City Public Schools, the YMCA, and the Roanoke Police Department.

Through this community partnership, the league gives an opportunity for youth and their families to build positive relationships with police officers, said Lea, in a venue that provides meaningful connections. Police officers have volunteered to serve as coaches and clock operators, alongside parents and other volunteers. The goal, said Lea, is to build a bridge across the community.

Councilman Lea thanked Life Ring Foundation President Kelly Woolwine for his generosity in supporting the league as its major sponsor.

Under the leadership of Mr. Woolwine, the Life Ring Foundation has been an active supporter of early childhood education and literacy, domestic violence prevention, and other programs throughout the Roanoke community.
