Faith Christian School received a mysterious gift this week in the form of an eight ton boulder that was deposited on its 28-acre property in Roanoke County.

The history of the infamous FCS boulder dates back to the early days of Faith’s construction of its new building on Buck Mountain Road in 2006.  The FCS Class of 2006, which was the last graduating class at the old facilities, wanted to leave a lasting mark at the new location.  The students chose a large rock that was located near the main entrance of the School and late one night, four senior boys painted the rock.

While doing so, an elderly neighbor, believing a rival school was defacing the property, called the police.  Considered a neighborhood nuisance, the rock was scrubbed clean and mysteriously disappeared shortly thereafter.  Stories differ on the rock’s removal, but the Class of 2006 was devastated.

In an anticlimactic conclusion, the students then painted a much smaller version of the rock FCS purple and  signed their names to it. This small replica now resides in the Faith Christian School main office.

But a couple of months ago, administrators were recounting this story to the school’s new Head, Peter Baur, who suggested that the boulder idea should be rekindled.  Rockydale Quarries was contacted and within 24 hours, the quarry generously offered to donate a new boulder to the school that will serve as the Senior Rock, “symbolizing the Faith Christian School Warrior spirit and tradition.”

The new boulder was secretly delivered on Wednesday morning to the FCS upper level just outside the Middle/Upper School entrance.  Under the cover of darkness on Thursday evening, the Class of 2015 will paint the rock and it will then be unveiled to the entire school on Friday, March 27th  at 9:45 a.m.  Before the rock is delivered this week, a time capsule, compiled by this year’s Seniors, is being prepared for placement underneath.

The Class of 2006 is invited to the special ceremony on Friday at 9:45 at the School to unveil the new Warrior boulder to the entire FCS community and invited guests.
