Center in The Square Announces Unexpected Change In Leadership

Center in the squareRecently Retired Director Jim Sears to Resume Post

The Western Virginia Foundation for the Arts and Sciences has announced that Barry L. Henderson, President and General Manager of Center in the Square, will be stepping down.

“Center is an economic engine and an important educational resource to our community.  I hope that my contributions will have a lasting effect benefiting all those, especially the children, who come to enjoy the many offerings supported by Center,” said Mr. Henderson.

“On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Barry for his commitment to the mission of Center and his success in growing new donors, and increasing contributions and financial support for the organization,” said George Cartledge, Jr., Chairman of the Board.

In connection with this transition, James C. Sears, Ed. D., who has been serving as a consultant for Center, will resume his previous role as President and General Manager.

Jim agreed to postpone his retirement and resume the leadership role at Center in the Square as President and General Manager.  For 20 years, Jim Sears led Center in the Square and created the culture that fosters innovation and broadened its strategic vision.  Jim was retained as a consultant with Center since his official retirement at the end of 2013, so the handoff will be seamless.  The board is very appreciative that Jim has agreed to step in and engage with the leadership team to ensure the financial stability and generate a bright future for Center.
