Wild Bill’s Sports Roundup

There’s nothing I endorse more than the checks and balances between our three government branches.

Likewise, we have those here at The Star. Especially the checking.

After my feature on Tuesday night’s VMI CIT semifinal in Lexington, word leaked out from corporate headquarters that The Chief was going to check to see if I was really covering the game. After all, I could have just watched it on CBS Sports from the Wild Bill studio and bluffed my way through play-by-play action. No chance fooling The Chief.

Sure enough, as I leisurely motored to Lexington (without a ” Tiddy Bear ” clipped on my shoulder strap, mind you) The Chief called, wanting my location.

Well, not only did I procure The Chief a ticket to the big game, but a generous Keydet Club member provided a second ducat on the house for his traveling party. A happy Chief, for sure.

The Chief joined me at court side during halftime, met hall of fame coach Troy Wells and seemed delighted that I was on CBS, sporting my Loudmouth pants. It IS “The most fun you can have with your pants on.”

I’m planning on slipping a dinner at that ritzy Lexington Mexican restaurant and a pair of margaritas on next month’s expense report. The Chief probably won’t bite on approving that one, but maybe he’ll be distracted by his “Perfect Polly.”

Speaking of margaritas (notice how this column flows), The Greenbrier Classic announced Tuesday afternoon that this year’s Concert Series will feature Margaritaville’s Jimmy Buffet on Friday July 4th, along with an appearance the previous night by Top-10 hybrid/R&B band Maroon 5.

The June 30th through July 6th PGA Tour event on the Olde White PGA course will also feature new car giveaways and hole-in-one payouts for spectators. Support our local FirstTee Roanoke Valley chapter by purchasing your tickets through the local chapter by calling 540-563-1833.

The Salem Red Sox open the 2014 campaign this Thursday with a four-game series at Myrtle Beach. The defending Carolina League champions entertain Winston-Salem for their home opener on Tuesday night April 8th, beginning a seven night home stand at Salem Memorial Stadium. A season of great promotions is set for Red Sox fans.

The world-champion Boston Red Sox appeared at The White House this week with Jonny Gomes wearing Loudmouth’s “Stars and Stripes” sports coat. If that’s what it takes, maybe Barack will invite me to DC to showcase my Loudmouth attire at 1600 Pennsylvania.

This Sunday night, the most prestigious awards in local high school basketball will be handed out in the annual Kiwanis Unsung Hero Awards Banquet. Honoring the behind-the-scenes team player that contributes to the overall success of each of 13 boys and girls squads, along with an all-star team, player of the year and coach of the year, the Kiwanis put the perfect final touch to the Roanoke, Salem and Botetourt basketball season. Watch our sports section next week for some of the winners.

Now, I’m second guessing our readers as we entertain an off-week letter to the mailbag.

Dear Wild Bill: My wife and I bought a couple of those ” Tiddy Bears” featured last week. But, our Teacup Poodle rides in the front seat and chewed one up. Is there a return policy? (Waldo/Moneta)

Sorry, Waldo. Refunds only good for damage by gnarling chihuahuas.

Until next week, send your questions to [email protected]. This column is going to the dogs.
