In January, crews began work on Market Square. The area between Center and the Square and 202 Market is being transformed into a more pedestrian-friendly area. The renovation will also make Farmers’ Market stalls and business storefronts more visible to those passing by.

By April, Market Square will have a whole new look and feel. Crews are currently working to install a concrete paver system, trees, and new lighting. The Farmers’ Market stalls are also being moved up from the front of businesses to the sidewalk that runs along Campbell Avenue.

Another new feature being added is two elevated platforms that will be used for live music, vendors, and even outdoor dining.

Once the project is finished. It will cap off a number of changes to the downtown area in recent years. “The new pedestrian-friendly Market Square is designed to complement the renovation of both the Market Building and Elmwood Park,” said Assistant City Manager Sherman Stovall. Center in the Square located next to Market Square also recently finished a multimillion renovation.

While barriers surround the area under construction nearby, businesses are open. The city is renovating Market Square during the winter months because that’s typically a slow time for
foot traffic downtown. The goal is to make the impact on businesses during construction as minimal as possible. The total cost of the project is $1.1 million.
