When VMI came up with its new mantra: “No ordinary college, no ordinary life,” they really meant it. Cadets from the 1st Class begin the approximately 80-mile march from VMI to New Market on Wednesday, honoring the cadets who marched the distance, to battle, in 1864. The upper-class cadets carry shoulder boards for the uniforms of the new cadets, symbolizing the official start of their cadetship following the ceremony in which they take the Cadet Oath.
