Byrd Fast Start Sinks Cave Spring in Non-District Baseball

Any fashionably late arrivers to Gary Walthall Field in Vinton Friday night quickly realized they had missed much of the action.

William Byrd's Devin Cassity barrels into third ahead of the tag from Cave Spring third baseman J.T. Roberts during the Terriers decisive 7-run first inning.

Cave Spring posted two runs in the top of the first, then saw William Byrd respond with seven in their half, as the Terriers rollerd to the 14-4 win in a game shortened to five innings due to the 10-run rule.

The Knights got things started after doubles by Jake Schuyler and Jordan Bryant keyed the opening 2-run frame for Cave Spring.

But, the Terriers sent eleven batters to the plate in the bottom half, and after five hits, a hit batsman and a pair of Cave Spring errors, led 7-2 after one inning.  The margin proved too much to overcome for the Knights as Byrd’s hitting remained sharp the rest of the game.

Timmy Meador led Byrd with three hits, including a home run, and five RBIs. Scott Spradlin picked up the win on the mound for the Terriers.

Bryant and Brett Meyers each had a pair of hits for the Knights.
