Patients at Carilion Clinic’s Breast Care Center will soon have a new, specially designed treatment chair thanks to a group of cancer survivors, care-givers and loved ones. The group participated in the first annual Smith Mountain Lake Poker Run to raise money for the Carilion Foundation to benefit breast cancer patients.

Event organizer Donna Ashbery presented a check for $2000 to the Breast Care Center staff. Ashbery says she and other supporter plan to make this an annual event.

The reclining chair that will be purchased with the donation will provide an important benefit for patients. Currently, if a patient becomes ill or light-headed during a procedure, the procedure may need to be interrupted while the patient is moved to a stretcher. With the new chair, the patient can be moved to a reclining position without interrupting the procedure.

“We are touched by this show of support for our staff and patients and appreciate the care and compassion it demonstrates,” said Eileen Kenny, M.D., Medical Director for the Breast Care Center. “Gifts such as this really make a difference.”
