Northside Softball Poised For Another State Run

With eight returning starters back from last year’s team that finished in the final four of the Group AA state tournament, Northside has all the makings to return to the state tournament in 2012.

Gone from last year’s team, that finished 24-4, is pitching sensation Lauren Boitnott, who had a stellar career at Northside. Returning for the Blue Ridge District tournament and Region III champs are seniors Kathleen Carr (catcher), Rae Hall (infield) and Brie Pinero (outfield/infield); juniors Kelsey Jarrett (IF), Taylor Grubb (OF/C) and Caitlyn Porterfield (IF); along with sophomores Katelyn Bowden (IF/P), Sarah Williams (P/IF) and Jessica Younts (P/OF).

Also donning the green and gold will be junior Amy Roberson (IF/OF/C), sophomores Carly Altizer (IF) and Taylor Carter (OF) and freshman Brittany Mills (OF).

When asked about this year’s team, head coach Lynn Richmond, who is starting her 25th season, said, “Practice/practice/practice.” As for what Viking that will make an impact this season, Richmond stated, “All of our players compete all year and have experience.”

Pitching, hitting and fielding will once again be a strong point this season. The veteran coach sees all of the district contests as being their top games.”Our team should be competitive,” added Richmond. “With hard work we hope to contend for another championship.

Northside opens its 2012 campaign on Monday, March 12, when they host Salem.
