United Way Women’s Initiative Gets Set to Launch into Action

Mary Blet addresses the United Way Women's group in the Palm Court at the Hotel Roanoke.

At a well attended “Southern Tea and Fashion Show” on Thursday, leadership givers to United Way  of Roanoke Valley (and those interested in becoming one) heard inspiring words from Maria Blet, a key  volunteer in the Miami/Dade and national United Way, as well as a vice president at Wells Fargo.

Introduced by Women’s Initiative Chair Tammy Finley of Advance Auto Parts, Blet had the crowd of  about 100 women laughing – but also seriously pondering their future goals, as she reminded them of  the many great accomplishments by women in our nation’s history.  She also told them of some notable  achievements by United Way women’s leadership groups in other regions, which have addressed such important issues as reducing teen pregnancy rates and raising graduation rates in their communities.

As United Way of Roanoke Valley focuses on improving the Education, Income and Health of our community, the Women’s Initiative is gearing up to mobilize its hundreds of  female high-level donors (giving $1,000 per year and more) and put its power behind at least one of these efforts, TBD. Those women interested in participating, as the group moves forward, should call Linda Webb at 777-4210.
