Independent Carl Cooper Announces Council Bid

Carl Cooper

Democrats and Republicans aren’t the only ones jockeying for the three Roanoke City Council seats up for grabs. Independent candidate Carl Cooper also announced his bid last week, saying among other things that “the time for wishy-washy is over.”  Cooper implored council members to make decisions and follow through, something he said he would do if elected in May.

Cooper touted Roanoke as “Home Sweet Home,” during a debut press conference, before launching into his criticism of City Council for the “merry go round of making decisions and then going back [on them] before the ink is dry.”  He cited the City Market building as a prime example, and the amphitheater as well. “If we are going to have an amphitheater, let’s figure out how to pay for it and do it,” he said.

Cooper, who describes himself as a community activist, wants to see the city’s comprehensive plan updated with “fresh new input” from citizens. He also promised not to balance the city’s budget “on the backs of schoolchildren.” Public safety and economic development also got airtime at his press conference. He has some experience in that arena — he chaired the public safety task force when the last comprehensive plan was adopted. Cooper vowed to cut the red tape and streamline the process for those that want to do business in Roanoke City.

“People First” is the theme of Cooper’s campaign, which he launched in City Council chambers last week. He has served on several boards, dealing with issues from HIV/AIDS to urban forestry.
