Virginia Cooperative Extension’s Roanoke office is seeking applicants for the next class of Master Food Volunteers. Master Food Volunteers are individuals trained in up-to-date, research-based knowledge on food preparation, nutrition, food safety, and physical activity and use this knowledge to educate the community. Applicants should possess a desire to enhance their skills and knowledge and enjoy working with people. There is no prior educational requirement for those interested in becoming a Master Food Volunteer.
The Virginia Cooperative Extension Roanoke office works with a variety of partners and organizations across the community. Volunteers will assist and lead nutrition education in public schools, private schools, and with homeschool groups. Programs are also offered through local libraries, community centers, and health fairs. Some highlights include cooking classes with individuals managing chronic illnesses and expanding the basic cooking knowledge of young parents, youth, and families.
The Fall 2019 training will be held at the Freedom First West End Community Room (1210 Patterson Ave SW, Roanoke) beginning Monday, August 12th from 9am to 12pm. Subsequent sessions will continue Mondays and Fridays through August 30th at the same time. There is a $75 fee to participate in the training, which provides volunteers with official tote bag and apron, training manual, and covers the cost of lunch for all sessions.
