Wild Bill’s Sports Roundup

The countdowns are on.

The first is the countdown to me getting out of this ankle cast and back on my feet to cover local sports. Looking better by the day, I will hopefully be back with summer golf coverage for all the traditional championships. At least The Chief has been cool with my recovery. I’ve got to admit my Loudmouth pants with a cat paws foot cast has become quite the style setter on the local sports scene.

Speaking of golf, we’re less than 30 days out from the seventh annual Greenbrier Classic PGA TOUR event in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The Star will be on hand for the tournament that runs July 4th through 10th.

Major changes for 2016 include an exciting benefit for fans. All weekly entry badges will be provided free for those that make the request on the Greenbrier Classic website and pick up the tickets at will call. Another big change this year will be the absence of the traditional Greenbrier Concert Series.

The countdown to the Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol is under 100 days for what is expected to be college football’s biggest game ever in attendance.  Over 150,000 are expected to be on hand for the September 10th showdown between the University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech at Bristol Motor Speedway. The Star will be on the sidelines in Bristol for what is one of the most anticipated match ups in the history of college football. Game time has been set at 8pm for the prime-time ABC telecast.

We head into the home stretch of high school teams looking for state championships. Several “Big-11” teams are still in the hunt. Here’s a look at the top prospects to watch.

Hidden Valley Boys Tennis will play for state championship in 3A final at 10 am Saturday at Liberty University against Blacksburg.

The Cave Spring Girls Tennis Team is well on their way to a repeat team state championship at the 3A level after their 5-2 team win over Riverside on Monday afternoon. Cave Spring advances to the championship match Saturday morning at 10 am on the courts at Liberty University. In singles, the Knights’ Fallon Delp is still in the running for a state title, and Fallon teams up with sister Reagan for a possible repeat in the state doubles.

Also still in contention:

Glenvar in 2A West Softball where the Highlanders play Central-Woodstock at 1pm Friday at the Moyer Sports Complex.

Salem in 4A Girls Soccer in a Friday match against Monacan.

Patrick Henry’s Ciara Mulcahy and Alex DeFelice in Girls 5A tennis doubles on Friday.

On to the Roanoke Valley Sports Club where football fans get the chance to meet NFL referee Terry McAuley. A three-time Superbowl referee, McAuley will be the guest speaker at the June 28th meeting at Roanoke Country Club. A 5:45 social will be followed by the 6:15 dinner meeting. Outside guests and prospective new members are invited to attend. Contact Maggie Drewry 540-353-1103 with questions or to purchase tickets for this exciting evening.

Now, to this edition’s Late Night Product Review where we take a look at a supposedly no-miss fishing gadget, the “Twitching Lure.”

Originally, the claim was this lure would attract a strike on every single cast in freshwater or saltwater. Independent reviewers questioned this claim, and it was replaced with a new video without mention of the outrageous ‘every cast’ guarantee.

But, the “Twitching Lure” seems to be the real deal. Flashing LED light, vibra-strike technology, a USB port to recharge and triple grip hooks make this prop impressive. Warnings that twitching lures are banned in some states could not be verified.

Research reveals the “Twitching Lure” flashes and twitches to mimic the movement of a wounded bait fish, signaling the DNA in fish that has prompted them to strike since prehistoric times. Science says they bite whether they’re hungry or not.

I’m giving the “Twitching Lure” a positive rating. Although not a fisherman, I like anything that twitches with a wink or a blink.
