A Little Bit of Everything

Terry RoanokeRoanoke has long been known as a “railroad town” as evidenced by the crossing signal pictured here and we did indeed start out that way. But Star Contributing Photographer Terry Aldhizer’s picture also captures several symbols of things the Roanoke Valley is now much better known for – including becoming a transportation hub (the Hunter Viaduct bridge), a center for arts and cultural attractions (the Taubman roof line) and the financial center for Southwest Virginia (Wells Fargo Building). Interestingly all of these icons are located in the footprint of what was once the old Jefferson Street section of the Viaduct that was torn down in 1989.

Sometimes it takes a little demolition before you can better build your future.
