Cave Spring didn’t have its best game on display Tuesday night at the Knights’ gym.

But, it was more than enough to take down the visiting Christiansburg Blue Demons 25-15; 25-17; 25-16 in the 3-0 River Ridge volleyball sweep.

Every time Christiansburg looked ready to make a run, Cave Spring reverted to its power at the net to keep the Demons at bay throughout each set.

“We were flat tonight,” Cave Spring head coach Tamalyn Tanis said of the somewhat methodical win. “We’ve been working on our defense and our speed was better. We’re 5-0, so we’ll take the win and move on.”

Tanis pointed to senior Christy Goldsmith as her defensive shining star against Christiansburg.

“I think we kind of went in waves tonight,” Goldsmith noted. “Things are going to get tougher, so we need to practice harder and stay focused.”

The Demons had some moments of brilliance with their hitters, but it wasn’t nearly enough to keep up the Cave Spring front line.

The Knights scored the first five points of the opening set, then gradually increased their advantage to 21-11 before trading the last eight scores for the 25-15 win.

Christiansburg was hanging around in the second set, trailing only 9-7, before the Knights reeled off an 8-1 run to lead 17-8. Like flipping a switch, the Demons scored 6 straight points to cut the deficit to 17-14, but Cave Spring answered with an 8-3 burst to go
up two sets.

The Demons led 9-6 in the third when Cave Spring rebounded to tie things at 10. The Knights then secured the match clincher with a 15-6 run.

Piper Roe led the Cave Spring power attack with 15 kills and 6 blocks. Meagan Harrison provided 25 assists, while fellow-senior Shannon Holsinger brought up 15 digs to go with 5 service aces.

Senior Katelynn Diloia led Christiansburg with 15 digs, while junior Chichi Okoronkwo hammered down five kills for the Blue Demons.
