Wild Bill’s Sports Roundup!

Bill TurnerAround The Chief, mum’s the word.

There is no better way to walk the hallowed halls of corporate headquarters after last week’s perfect prediction slate. That’s right, there were no misses.

I’ve probably blown any chance of reeling in the ole boy for another shot at a new car.

Thanks to everyone who has stopped me in my tracks or sent a message of congratulations for the perfect week, the sixth in column history.

Shakespeare’s Henry VI Part 2 had Sir John Hume tell us “no words but mum, seal up your lips, for you must be silent.”

Likewise, a great pundit once noted, “mum is counsel,” meaning ‘you are advised to say nothing.’

You always learn something when you enter the depths of this column. Yes, mum’s the word.

Last week, I said “goodbye”, the requisite way to close a Ouija session. The year-to-date accuracy of my predictions are now .875.

Accordingly, we move to this week’s ‘Big-11’ lineup of games.

Chief, it’s Ouija time. Please dim the lights. Mum’s the word.

PATRICK HENRY AT ALBEMARLE: The Patriots answered the bell last Friday night against William Fleming. The groundwork is in place for a great PH season. Patrick Henry- 28 Albemarle- 17

SALEM AT NORTHSIDE: A super matchup at Jim Hickan Field between a pair of strong teams. Get there early for a seat. The Vikings need a perfect game to pull off the win. Salem- 35 Northside- 24

WILLIAM BYRD AT MAGNA VISTA: The Terriers had a tough visit to Salem last Friday night. It doesn’t get any easier in Ridgeway. Magna Vista- 31 William Byrd- 21

WILLIAM FLEMING AT E.C. GLASS: The key for the Colonels this week is the injury hangover. A win in Lynchburg will cure some ills. William Fleming- 27 E.C. Glass- 26

ALLEGHANY AT CAVE SPRING: The Mountaineers will try to disrupt the Knights’ homecoming game. Can the young Cave Spring defense rise to the occasion? Alleghany- 28 Cave Spring- 25

FORT DEFIANCE AT LORD BOTETOURT: Assuming the Cavaliers aren’t looking ahead to a visit by Northside, this should be a walk in the park in Daleville. Lord Botetourt- 49 Fort Defiance- 6

GLENVAR AT GRAYSON COUNTY: All of Grayson County will be on hand in Independence for the defending 2A state champs. Fortunately, the Highlanders only have to go against 11 at a time. Glenvar- 28 Grayson County- 22

ROANOKE CATHOLIC AT AUBURN: Would have looked like a gimme for Auburn a couple years ago. But, the Celtics are itching to hit somebody after the Massanutten no-play fiasco. Auburn- 31 Roanoke Catholic- 27

CHRISTCHURCH AT NORTH CROSS (SAT-2pm)
North Cross looks to be over the injury bug after a romp pass Blessed Sacrament. Christchurch may well be the most challenging opponent on the Raider schedule. Upset special. North Cross- 34 Christchurch- 32

LIBERTY AT HIDDEN VALLEY (SAT-7pm)
A rare Saturday night affair at Bogel Stadium where the Titan defense looks to stop Liberty’s speedsters. Hidden Valley goes to the air. Hidden Valley- 28 Liberty- 16

Last call for the monthly meeting of the Roanoke Valley Sports Club where guest speaker ESPN/ ACC basketball analyst Cory Alexander takes to the podium this Monday night at Roanoke Country Club. 5:45 social/ 6:15 dinner meeting. Contact Maggie
Drewry at 540-353-1103 to make reservations and purchase tickets.

Now, to the mailbag where one reader asks about the key characteristic of a bold planchette.

Dear Wild Bill: Every game correct? It’s like voodoo. Does your Ouija planchette simply shout out the winners during a session? (Hazel/Floyd Co.)

No. Hazel. It’s low key. Mum’s the word.

Until next week, keep your lips sealed, but send those comments to [email protected]
