New Commemorative Bench & Tree Program Begins in Roanoke County

BenchThis month the non-profit group Leisure Legacy has implemented a new program allowing the public to purchase commemorative trees and benches to beautify Roanoke County parks. The group will now process requests for these commemorative or memorial items in conjunction with Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism officials.

While an informal system of memorial dedication has existed in the past, this new program formalizes this effort while making donation opportunities more widely available to the public.

Donated trees and benches will improve the aesthetics and infrastructure of county public play spaces, while also helping to raise funds for recreation scholarships and other park initiatives.

Additionally, Leisure Legacy’s non-profit status will make it easier for donors to make tax-deductible contributions.

According to Leisure Legacy President Wendi Schultz, the commemorative bench and tree program will have a long lasting impact. “Parks hold a special place in our community, and I can’t think of a better way to honor a loved one than by providing the gift of shade and a place to rest that can be enjoyed for generations.”

Over the past month Leisure Legacy has processed three bench donations, including a dedication ceremony this week that is scheduled for Thursday, June 25 at 10:00 am for a bench at Green Hill Park in memory of Onjelique Stevens who passed away in 2007 after a life-long battle with cystic fibrosis.

Stevens was a graduate of Glenvar High School and Roanoke College, and inspired others with her smile, leadership and encouragement. The bench is being dedicated by her parents, and will be located at the Green Hill Park playground. The Stevens family welcomes visitors at the event.

Complete information about the commemorative bench and tree program can be found at www.LeisureLegacy,org. Prices are $700 for a tree and $1800 for a bench. Each bench or tree includes a custom plaque inscribed with a personal sentiment or name. Leisure Legacy is a non-stock 501(c)(3) corporation.
