Don’t fret, Roanoke ice hockey fans.

Despite the long-departed Roanoke Express East Coast Hockey League team, there’s still plenty of excellent frozen pond action and entertainment at the Berglund Center (formally Roanoke Civic Center) in Roanoke.

The Virginia Tech ice hockey team is on a roll after two wins over the weekend on the home Berglund ice, and three more home games are set as the Hokies wind down their regular season schedule.

Friday night, Tech steamrolled the West Virginia Mountaineers, jumping out to a six-goal lead after two periods before cruising to the 8-1 win in front of a crowd estimated to be just over 2000 by Tech ice hockey general manager Chris Arnold.It was the largest home crowd of the season. Tech goalie

Kirk Smith picked up the win in the pipes for the Hokies, stopping all but one Mountaineer shot. Zach Taylor took the loss in goal for WVU, getting pelted with 55 shots and stopping 47.

Saturday night, the Hokies jumped out to a 4-0 lead before knocking off North Carolina State 5-1 in a hard fought game that included plenty of chippy play by both squads. Key for the Hokies was killing off a 5-on-3 power play late in the third period when the Wolfpack looked poised to make it a tight game.

Goalie Tanner Jones was nearly perfect in goal for Tech, stopping all but one State shot. Wolfpack goalie Calvin Stone was hammered between the pipes by 47 Hokie shots on goal, with five finding the twine.

This Friday, January 16th, the Delaware Blue Hens visit the Berglund Center for a 7:30 matchup against Tech. On Saturday, January 17th, the puck drops at noon as Tech hosts the Rowan Profs. Friday, January 23rd will be the final Tech home game as the Maryland Terrapins come to town for a 7:30 rough and tumble contest. Tech is currently ranked #11 in the Southeast Region, while Delaware sits at #8, Rowan #6 and the Maryland Terps #15.

Gates open one hour prior to to game time. Tickets for all games are $5 for adults, with children 12-and-under free, and Tech students and faculty free with proper ID.
