Final Fall Fill-up

Terry's Butterfly (721x538)A migrating Monarch Butterfly takes in some of the last available pollen from a fall bloom in Roanoke City. The royal winged nymphalidae is known for its amazing seasonal migration undertaken on an annual basis. The population east of the Rocky Mountains migrates to the sanctuaries of the Mariposa Monarca Biosphere Reserve in Mexico, while those on the western side choose a slightly shorter flight to a winter vacation in sunny California. Star contributing photographer Terry Aldhizer captured this brightly lit specimen while out enjoying one of last week’s glorious fall afternoons.
