Wild Bill’s Weekly Sports Roundup!

Oops….I did it again.

The big snow a couple weeks ago sorta gave the impression that I’m a little lazy after not pitching in to shovel the walks at corporate headquarters.

Well, the snow this week gave me a chance to redeem myself. The Chief was away, but I knew he’d be monitoring things and I didn’t need one of those Perry White – Jimmy Olsen looks when he got back.

I drove by headquarters where the snow was piling up in the grass but hadn’t stuck on the streets or sidewalks. Good thing, because I forgot my shovel. I simply photographed the scene and left the pic with a note: “Chief, my back is killing me, but I hope the sidewalks meet your approval”.

Before I calculate what local snow removal outfits are getting this season and submit my invoice, let’s move quickly to local high school basketball.

And, now, there are two.

State championship basketball reaches the semifinal round this weekend with two members of the ” Big-11 ” still in the mix. We’ll have back-to-back match ups Saturday afternoon at the Salem Civic Center for both entries.

On the girl’s side, the Lady Colonels of William Fleming (21-6) will take on Woodrow Wilson (21-4) at 2:45 p.m., with the winner advancing to the Group 4A championship game on Thursday, March 13th at the VCU Siegel Center in Richmond (6:30 tip-off).

At 4:30 this Saturday, a Group 3A semifinal has the Lord Botetourt boys ( 24-2 ) battling John Marshall ( 20-5 ). The winner here advances to the Siegel Center on March 13th for a 2 p.m. tip-off against Thursday’s Spotswood-George Wythe winner in the other 3A semifinal. Interestingly, this poses the possibility of a rematch of the 3A West final last Friday night at Rustburg, where Lord Botetourt handed Spotswood its first loss of the season.

Keep in mind that Lord Botetourt held the top spot in the Wild Bill ” Big-11 ” Top-5 poll for virtually the entire season. The Cavs certainly have validated that selection.

A housekeeping matter is appropriate at this time. I inadvertently omitted the Roanoke Catholic girls team in last week’s ” Big-11 ” playoff slate. Congratulations go out to the Lady Celtics for reaching the VISAA Division II girls state semifinals before falling to Wakefield at St. Anne’s Belfield in Charlottesville.

High school spring sports are set to begin in mid-March and The Star will bring you complete coverage for baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse for our local teams.

Now, a quick peek in the mailbag where readers inquire about everything from Olympic fashion to imaginative possibilities of last week’s City-Kitty contraption.

Dear Wild Bill: Did my eyes deceive me, or were the curlers on Norway’s men’s team wearing some of those Loudmouth outfits you’re now noted for? (Sydney/Roanoke)

You’re pretty observant, Sydney. The Norwegian men’s curling team did in fact wear Loudmouth throughout the Sochi games. Why wasn’t it mentioned? According to IOC rules, neither NBC or Loudmouth was allowed to mention any affiliation without the risk of disqualification of the Norwegian team. Now, the blackout is lifted and the world can see the styles. Check them out at loudmouth.com.

Dear Wild Bill Review Dept.: Would there be any reason my husband, Murray, couldn’t take advantage of City-Kitty, especially the automatic flusher accessory? (Hazel/Covington)

Go for it, Hazel. As long as Murray can keep his feet on the seat.

Until next week, keep your comments coming to [email protected].
