Author, photographer and naturalist Fred First will present One Place, Understood: Belonging in Nature, Place and Community, on November 14th, 7:00 pm at the Bent Mountain Center located at 10148 Tinsley Lane.
His digital nature and landscape photography help tell the stories of our relationship to place, nature and community, pointing toward a planetary ethic that he calls a Personal Ecology.
In the hour-long program, First will present a “visual essay” from his photographic vision of belonging, a chapter from the “natural history of a biology watcher.”
First holds masters degrees in vertebrate zoology and physical therapy from Alabama universities, and has been a biology teacher and physical therapist by profession.
His two non-fiction books, “Slow Road Home” and “What We Hold in Our Hands,” celebrate the riches that we possess in our families and communities, in our natural diversity, social capital and Appalachian culture, old and new.
He has maintained a daily photo-blog, Fragments from Floyd, for more than eleven years. He is a biweekly columnist for the Floyd Press and contributor to the Roanoke Star as well as a contributing essayist for WVTF.
The program will offer opportunity for discussion. Light refreshments will be served.
