Let’s get one thing perfectly clear. There are no shutdowns at the Wild Bill Column.

No debt crises, no filibusters and no room for babbling goofballs. We get straight to the point, lay it out and get on with business.

First, we want to invite everyone to the monthly meeting of the Roanoke Valley Sports Club on Monday, October 21st at the Salem Civic Center. The 5:45 social and 6:15 dinner meeting welcomes former UVa. baseball standout and new Pulaski County High School head coach Jared King as the guest speaker. Guests and perspective new members are invited to attend. For more information contact Joyce Montgomery at 540-354-6751.

Next, we offer a resolution congratulating the Hidden Valley golf team for its third place finish this week in the Group 3A state golf championship at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg. In the individual top-20, Hidden Valley’s Kristin Hearp tied for sixth with a 2-round total of 147. Cave Spring’s Drew Lagan took tenth place at 150, while his Knight teammate T.K. Garrett tied for 11th at 151.

Now, we move quickly to this week’s ” Big-11 ” football predictions. Since the boys in D.C. had been sitting on their helmets the last three weeks, I considered inviting Reid, Obama and McConnell as guest pickers. But, I ditched that idea when I realized they’re better at gridlock than gridiron. That being duly noted, it’s time for madam secretary to reveal this week’s polling results.

NORTHSIDE at LORD BOTETOURT: The much-anticipated matchup between a pair of undefeated teams unfolds in Daleville. Two talented teams that can score a lot of points. Botetourt primarily comes at their opponents on the ground, while Northside is equally efficient by land and by air. That may be the difference in the end. One thing for sure, get there early. It should be a dandy. Northside- 24   Lord Botetourt- 19

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY at WILLIAM BYRD: The 5-1 Terriers host the 1-5 Wildcats. Byrd is firmly in the hunt in the Blue Ridge. Rockbridge may have trouble upsetting things in Vinton.

William Byrd- 30   Rockbridge County- 13

WILLIAM FLEMING at ALLEGHANY: The newly configured Blue Ridge District offers the unpredictable matchup in Low Moor. Fleming is in the midst of a four-game skip and you can expect Alleghany to be pass-happy in this one. Alleghany- 31   William Fleming- 22

PULASKI COUNTY at CAVE SPRING: The Cougars are coming off a loss to Franklin County, while the Knights had their way last Friday night at Carroll County. Has Cave Spring found its offense? Cave Spring- 27    Pulaski County- 21

SALEM at BLACKSBURG: Salem answered the call last Friday in Christiansburg. The Spartans two losses are history. Blacksburg may have its hands full in this one. Salem- 38   Blacksburg- 10

GLENVAR at FLOYD COUNTY: The 3-3 Highlanders visit 1-5 Floyd. Glenvar won in a shootout last year at Highlander Heaven. This time it looks good where the buffalo roam. Glenvar- 34   Floyd County- 20

ROANOKE CATHOLIC at FUQUA: Catholic takes its 4-3 record on the road to Waynesboro where 4-4 Fuqua awaits. Fuqua has one win by forfeit and lost to the Celtics 41-0 last year. Could be a couple hints there. Roanoke Catholic- 33   Fuqua- 19

Until next week, I’m heading to fix the paddlewheel at Mabry’s Mill. Like D.C., there seems to be a couple of screws loose. In the meantime, send your write-in questions to [email protected]
