Roanoke’s Dr. Bill Gordge has been named the Cox Conserves Hero for the cable provider’s Roanoke market and is competing for the state Cox Conserves Hero award.

Gordge is a long-time member of the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club and a founder of the “Wednesday Crew,” a group of volunteers that meets mid-week year-round to build and maintain outdoor trails in the Roanoke region.

Cox Conserves Heroes is an awards program created by Cox Enterprises and The Trust for Public Land that honors Heroes among us who work to create, preserve, improve or enhance the shared outdoor places in our communities.

Gordge was selected from submissions from the public by a panel of local judges, including last year’s Roanoke hero, the Blue Ridge Land Conservancy’s Janet Scheid of Vinton. As the Roanoke winner, Gordge will receive $2,500 to be given to the local nonprofit of his choice. Gordge is now competing against two other Cox Conserves Heroes from northern Virginia and Hampton Roads for the state title, which carries a $7,500 prize that will also go to an area nonprofit.

The state winner will be determined by an online vote. To vote for Gordge, go to coxconservesheroes.com/virginia/vote.aspx, where you can also watch video vignettes about all three Cox Conserves heroes from Virginia. Voting is underway now and ends on June 17.
