WSLS 10 Celebrates 60th Anniversary With Special Program

WSLS 10, has announced the production of an hour long, one-time show “WSLS 10’s 60th Anniversary Special”. This retrospective will include memorable events from the past 60 years, including commentary from some long time favorites, like Lee Garrett and Charlie Boswell.

The special will be broadcast live from the History Museum of Western Virginia in Downtown Roanoke, on December 14th at 7pm. The show coincides with Roanoke’s Christmas Parade featuring a WSLS 10 float with a 60th Anniversary theme.

“Months of work and research have gone into this special hour and it’ll be sure to stir some feelings of nostalgia from viewers who may remember some of the oldest TV shows in the state,” says Leesa Wilcher, General Manager of WSLS 10. “The interview with Lee Garrett is especially fascinating seeing as how he was with WSLS since 1953.”

A station of firsts, WSLS 10 was the first in Virginia to begin broadcasting west of Richmond, and for many years their signal was received in several surrounding states, some as far away as Florida, according to Jim Moore, WSLS 10’s first station manager. WSLS 10 was also the first in color, first to use videotape, and the first to broadcast local news in high definition on October 31st, 2007.
