Hokies Edge Wahoos in Battle for Commonwealth Cup

Cavalier tailback #33 Perry Jones gets around Tech free safety #8 Detrick Bonner for a key gain Saturday.

Cody Jounell connected on a 27-yard field goal as time expired, and Virginia Tech escaped with a 17-14 win over rival Virginia Saturday afternoon at Lane Stadium.
On a frigid, wind-swept field, the Cavaliers came back from an early second quarter 7-0 deficit to tie the game with 3:30 left in the half to send the game to the break 7-7.
Virginia took a 14-7 lead early in the third quarter when Brent Urban scooped up a Logan Thomas fumble, racing 16-yards to the end zone.
The Cavaliers looked to be set to increase their lead midway through the third, but came up short on a fake field goal, and Tech responded with an 85-yard drive to knot the score at 14. A late UVa turnover set the stage for Journell’s boot.
Virginia led in the passing game 187-129 yards, but the Cavaliers were held to 30 rushing yards and seven first downs on the afternoon.
The win, Tech’s eighth straight over UVa, made the Hokies bowl eligible after finishing the season 6-6. UVa finished the year 4-8.
