A Breakfast of Champions featuring Paralympics Medalist John Register will be held at the Blue Ridge Independent Living Center on Thursday, July 14, beginning at 9:30 a.m. to bring awareness about the abilities of people with disabilities.

Register is a motivational speaker who has spoken on a variety of occasions with his powerful keynote, “Hurdling Adversity.” He has appeared on countless national television programs, has been profiled in newspaper articles, and has encouraged people of all ages to pursue their dreams.

Register dedicated himself to track becoming a three-time All-American in track and field from the University of Arkansas.  After graduating in 1988, he enlisted in the U.S. Army but continued to pursue athletics through the Army’s World Class Athlete Program winning many medals during his service.

After qualifying for the 1988 and 1992 Olympic trials, Register set his eyes on the 1996 Olympic team.  Unfortunately on May 17, 1994, Register hyper-extended his knee while training. Following surgery, gangrene set in ultimately requiring amputation of his leg.

Blue Ridge Independent Living Center is a private, nonprofit organization that assists individuals with disabilities to be independent.  BRILC also works with the community to ensure it is accessible.  This event is made possible through a collaborative effort with Virginia Amateur Sports, organizers of the Coventry Commonwealth Games.  Bagels and fruit will be provided by Panera Bread.  Those in attendance will have a chance to win Abuelo’s VIP Passes or 2011 Festival Tickets from Chateau Morrisette.
