Hokies Serve Up Late Thrills in Win Over Huskers

Some were already filing out of Lane Stadium last Saturday when it appeared that Virginia Tech would lose to #19 Nebraska; after all the Hokies hadn’t done much on offense when it came to scoring in the red zone. The Huskers, who had their own problems, hitting nothing but field goals, seemingly had the game under control.  But then the Tech “D” stiffened and the Hokies got the ball back with less than two minutes left in the game.

Shortly thereafter Danny Coale caught an 80 yard pass that put Tech at the Nebraska 3-yard line, people stopped leaving Lane Stadium and the Hokies had another win after quarterback Tyrod Taylor scrambled and found Dyrell Roberts in the end zone for the winning score. Virginia Tech pulled out a 16-15 victory, one of the most thrilling conclusions witnessed at Lane in years.

Nebraska head coach Bo Pellini was livid after the game: “we didn’t make the play. We had plenty of opportunities to put that game away and we didn’t.” Hokies head coach Frank Beamer saw it differently, of course. “This is one of those games that could turn things around, if you build on it and learn from it. I was proud of our clock management at the end.” He’ll need the positive momentum this Saturday, when top-20 Miami comes to Blacksburg for a nationally televised game.
