Floyd’s upcycle lamp artist, Susan Icove, has curated a show of nationally known fellow upcycle artists to be at The Floyd Center for the Arts’ Hayloft Gallery in Floyd VA October 8 – November 26, 2016.  “Upcycled” will be the first exhibit held at the center under its new name Floyd Center for the Arts.  The Opening Reception is free and open to the public, with light snacks and a cash bar, on Saturday, October 8, 5-7pm at the center.

Eleven artists from across the United States have been

invited to display artworks that evoke the spirit of upcycling.  Upcylcing is probably considered a way of life for many, but for others, taking “trash” and create something new and better than the original is just not commonplace.  Susan Icove is the center’s Featured Artist of the Year and has hand picked these artists to demonstrate the world of upcycling to our region.

As an upcycle artist herself, Susan, who is an owner of Floyd’s Troika Gallery, has a soft spot for artwork created in this manner.  “As a fellow transformer of by-products, waste materials, and discarded junk, I am excited to bring a collection of other artists doing “Upcycled Art” to Floyd and our regional community,” stated Susan.  “I get a kick seeing how these like-minded artists have repurposed disposables

and found new life fabricating sculptures, jewelry, wall pieces, and marionettes etc. while using these materials. This show promises to awaken your ideas of what can be done with no longer desirable objects, and as the saying goes ‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!’.”

The exhibition artists include: Randall Cleaver, Takoma Park, MD; David  Edgar, Landrum SC; Amy Hart, Charlotte NC; Barbara Irwin, Austin TX; Sunni Mercer, Tulsa, OK; John Sager, Austin TX; Susan Skinner, Albuquerque NM; Bill Skrips, Cerrillos NM; Zass Designs (Zulay and Steph Smith), Raleigh, NC: Michael Stasiuk, Portsmouth NH.
