Filmmaker, Movie Director Ron Maxwell to Visit Roanoke College

A Hollywood filmmaker and director, known for his American Civil War epics, will make several appearances at Roanoke College next week.

Ron Maxwell, who wrote and directed “Gettysburg,” “Gods and Generals,” “Copperhead” and other films, will visit Roanoke on Tuesday, Oct. 4 and Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Maxwell will speak to a film studies class at Roanoke on Wednesday, and he is available for campus interviews at various times throughout the day. To schedule an interview with him, please contact the College’s Public Relations Office at 540-375-2282.

 The Business of Show Business – Ron Maxwell, filmmaker and director

Tuesday, Oct. 4, 7 p.m., Colket Center Wortmann Ballroom

One of the film industry’s leading directors of movies capturing pivotal moments in American history will speak at Roanoke College. Ron Maxwell, a well-known filmmaker and director, will share his passion for producing authentic films that tell moving stories about our country’s past. He will discuss business aspects required for making movies, including how to lead a film production, ethical decision-making and the power of teamwork.

Maxwell, a graduate of the NYU Film Institute, has been writing and directing films for more than 40 years. He is best known for writing and directing several American Civil War epics, including “Gettysburg,” “Gods and Generals” and “Copperhead.”

Maxwell’s visit is sponsored by the Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity, in partnership with the Center for Leadership and Entrepreneurial Innovation at Roanoke College.

 Film Screening: “Copperhead”

Wednesday, Oct. 5, 6 p.m., Olin Theater

“Copperhead” is a film based on a Civil War novel by Harold Frederic that tells the story of Abner Beech, a farmer from Upstate New York who defies his neighbors and government in 1862. The film will be followed by a question and answer discussion with director, Ron Maxwell.
