The Opening Reception for The Market Gallery’s Labor Day show takes place on ArtByNight, Friday, Sept 2 and will feature artist talks from 6:15 – 7:00 pm.

The show highlights 3 artists’ different approaches to Naturalism, featuring contrasting takes on the still life by Judith Arkell and Max Mitchell, and large landscapes with figures by Ross Arkell.
Judith Arkell’s deft pastels of ultra-feminine interiors include china and carefully arranged summer flowers; they dance with color, shadow, and nuance.
Max Mitchell’s oils on panel present a different mood, each focusing minutely on a single every-day object— a paper-white narcissus outgrowing its water-glass, for example, or a discarded banana peel, curling and turning brown on a kitchen counter.
In his trademark oversized, contoured canvases, Ross Arkell shows us his fanciful visions of retro Americana—in one, a young woman in a hooded cape walks through the woods beside a lumbering grizzly bear. The shows will hang from August 28 through September 24.
The Market Gallery, a regional artists’ cooperative, is open 10:00 am to 5:30 pm Tuesday – Saturday. And is located at 23 Salem Avenue, Roanoke, VA 24011, the corner of Wall St and Salem Ave in Roanoke’s historic downtown market.  For additional information call The Market Gallery (540) 342-1177 or visit www.marketgalleryroanoke.com
