“Starcropolis” Promises To Be Magical Moment on Mill Mountain

SCAn event like never before is planned atop Mill Mountain on Labor Day weekend. “Starcropolis” is a grand festival of theatre on the mountain celebrating the Roanoke Star and the people who have made it glow, with generations of stories from the Roanoke landmark.

Led by Hollins University, a stage will be erected where the Mill Mountain Playhouse once stood. For years, the charming theatre brought audiences to the mountaintop on summer nights to enjoy a play and on Sept. 4, the magic is happening again.

“An idea like this just might do something for this community that would electrify it like nothing else could,” said Hollins Theatre Insitute Director Ernie Zulia. The event includes trips on the Star Line Trolley, mini performances and star stages on the mountain, a Galaxy Cafe, the main event featuring star stories, and an afterglow event to wrap up the evening.

Vignettes and monologues were created especially for this event by award-winning playwrights and some of the region’s most famous bestselling authors.

“I’ve had this event marked on my calendar since it was announced,” said Roanoke City Manager Chris Morrill. “This is such a great opportunity to bring people, of all walks of life together, for an evening on our mountain at our special Star. I can’t wait to hear the stories that will be told by the talented performers of this valley.”
