Evergreen: A Century of Service Highlights The History of Both the Park and The People Buried There

Century of Service cover (800x800)A new book, Evergreen: A Century of Service, written by Don Wilson with Denise Allen Membreno, marks the 100th anniversary of Evergreen Burial Park. It reveals the local history of Roanoke through the story of the people and the development of the first Modern Burial Park in the Roanoke Valley.

Evergreen: A Century of Service is a story about Roanoke and the people who created our local, regional, national, and yes, even world history. It is a story that spans more than 100 years when you consider the lifespans of the history makers.

Nestled on nearly 50 acres between the Ghent, Wasena, and Raleigh Court neighborhoods, Evergreen Burial Park, formerly the old “solitude” farm, has rolling hills and mountain views.

The Park is more beautiful today than it was 100 years ago when three prominent Roanoke businessmen created a “modern burial park,” and more importantly, a lasting business that still serves its community. From its initial conception, Evergreen Burial Park has been, and is today, a special place, populated by many exceptional people who had an enormous impact on the place we call home and Evergreen: A Century of Service tells the stories of some of the men and women who are buried there.

The park office offers a free guide book for a self-guided walking tour of the cemetery that highlights the resting places of many of these remarkable citizens. Evergreen Burial Park office is located at 1307 Summit Avenue, SW Roanoke. Telephone calls are welcomed 540-342-2593.
