Oxen in the Blue Ridge Driving Workshops Coming June 12-14 to Ferrum College

9890 Oxen in the Blue Ridge at the Ferrum College (800x533)Oxen enthusiasts and oxen teams will meet at Ferrum College on June 12 – 14, 2016, for a weekend of hands-on workshops. Held at Ferrum’s living history Blue Ridge Farm Museum, Oxen in the Blue Ridge gives participants of all levels experience in driving skills, training techniques, yoking methods, and ox care.

Seven oxen will be on hand for practice use, and attention will be given both to teams and single oxen. Workshop attendees do not need to own cattle or oxen themselves (or even plan to own such animals). Lead instructor Tim Huppe, Manager at New Hampshire’s Sanborn Mills Farm, brings to the workshop over 50 years of experience as an ox teamster and yoke maker.

Oxen in the Blue Ridge is geared for adults, but youths (8 – 15 years old) may also participate when registered by an accompanying parent. Pre-registration is required for all participants. Campus lodging and meal packages, onsite camping, and youth scholarships are available. Oxen in the Blue Ridge is a program of Ferrum College’s Blue Ridge Institute & Museum, the State Center for Blue Ridge Folklore.

Registration and details can be found at www.blueridgeinstitute.org. For more information contact the Blue Ridge Institute & Museum at [email protected]
