Opera Roanoke Announces $100,000 Double Matching Challenge

la_traviata_website_sliderAt a private reception for its top supporters hosted by Woods Rogers and Hometown Bank on Thursday, February 11, Opera Roanoke showcased its leading lady for “La Traviata” and announced a private foundation’s challenge gift of $ 100,000, which must be matched twice by June 30.

Amy Cofield Williamson, who has understudied Violetta, the lead role in “La Traviata”, for world famous soprano Renée Fleming, sang a series of love songs with tenor and real life husband Scott Williamson, Artistic Director of Opera Roanoke. Describing how they originally met while starring as the tragic lovers in a Maryland production of “La Traviata”, the Williamsons wowed the crowd of over 200 with one passionate and thrilling opera classic after another.

During a break between songs it was revealed that Opera Roanoke’s supporters had already raised more than $ 50,000 toward the challenge, and by the end of the evening the total had reached $103,000. This leaves just $ 93,000 that must be raised before the end of the fiscal year in order to claim the originally offered gift of $ 100,000.

“A total of $ 300,000 on hand, as we go into the finale of our 40th anniversary season with “La Traviata” on April 8 and 10 and gear up for our 2016-17 season, will come in very handy”, said Board President Dr. Bruce Johnson. “Tax deductible gifts of any size are very welcome and needed to help us reach that goal.”
