The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra will celebrate the enchantment of Valentine’s Day with a performance of passionate music from Austrian composers Mozart, Schubert, and Johann Strauss II at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16.

Presented by the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech, the performance will be held in the Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre, located within the Moss Arts Center’s Street and Davis Performance Hall at 190 Alumni Mall.

The romantic evening of Austrian works features Serenade No. 9 in D Major, “Posthorn,” the last of many works Mozart wrote for Salzburg, Austria, specifically to celebrate the mid-summer end of the academic year at the University of Salzburg.

Strauss’ waltz, “Roses from the South,” will also be performed. Strauss originally created the piece in 1880 for his operetta “Das Spitzentuch der Königen” (“The Queen’s Lace Handkerchief”). The evening includes Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 in C Major, “The Great.”  Described by the composer as a “grand symphony,” the work inspires audiences with its orchestral sound, and combination of dramatic energy and wistful lyricism.
