The Promise of Christmas

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:

“God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;

The Wrong shall fail,

The Right prevail,

With peace on earth, good-will to men.”

For many, this year has brought moments of great joy and for others grief. Some families have seen their share of challenges, and our nation as a whole faces new threats from those who seek nothing more than to spread terror. We need the reminder from Longfellow’s poem Christmas Bells that the wrong shall fail, the right will prevail, with peace on earth, and goodwill to men. There is no greater promise of this than is found at Christmas.

We have so many gifts to celebrate. Right at the top of the list are the religious freedoms and liberties we have as Americans that make the very celebration of this season possible. It’s our men and women in uniform standing guard at posts near and far who have preserved these gifts. I would be remiss to not acknowledge that during the holiday season, many of our military personnel find themselves far from the comforts of home and family for these very reasons. We must also remember the parents, children, and spouses who carry on while their loved ones are away. Our gratitude and prayers as a nation are with our troops and their families now and throughout the year.

As we gather with loved ones and reflect on the year that has passed, Christmas is a celebration of a promise fulfilled and of hope for the future. The steadfast resolve and generous spirit of the American people never cease to amaze me. Time and time again, we have seen men and women across the country join together to help those in need. When we look past all of the trials we may face, big or small, it is imperative that we embrace goodwill and, with all that we can give, pass that promise of hope on to others throughout the year.

It is truly an honor to have the opportunity to serve the Sixth Congressional District and be a part of your communities. From my family to yours, I wish you a safe and joyous holiday season, a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. May the peace and joy of this season and a sense of renewed hope for our nation fill your heart, and may God continue to bless the United States of America.
